Head & Horns Competition… More Than 3 Decades of Record Achievements

“Every year we’re surprised by the unexpected”, said David Morris, the manager of the Sportsmen’s Shows Head & Horns Competition.  “Most years we know of trophy class animals that will be brought to the shows to be measured.  We look forward to seeing those animals and the opportunity to measure them and ultimately enter them in the record books. But at least once a year someone walks in with a set of antlers, horns or a skull that is not only unexpected but jaw-dropping. Those are moments you don’t forget…and we’ve had hundreds of those moments!”

In fact, last year, the Sportsmen’s Shows Head & Horns Competition registered a new world record blacktail deer harvested in Southern Oregon.  “We knew right when those antlers came through the door that they were pretty special.”

The Head & Horns Competition has been running since the early 90’s with literally tens of thousands of horns, antlers and heads measured. Morris and his team are certified measurers for the record books and David and his team produce the record books for the region.

And the head, horns or antlers you have measured don’t need to be of your doing.  Maybe there’s a set of antlers in the attic that’s been gathering dust for decades you inherited from a great great uncle…bring them in!

There’s a fee to have them measured and entered in the contest, $40.  It’s well worth it! With prizes like Savage rifles, Leupold scopes, Fort Knox Safes, items from RMEF, Benchmade knives and Danner and LaCrosse boots, there’s plenty of great gear to win.

The new record book, now in its 7th edition, will be available for purchase at the Sportsmen’s Shows.  It’s hot of the press, full color and 752 pages with more than 21,000 entries.
